Hi folks!

I am a new user this year and have noticed an odd behavior in NextGen Data Flow Diagrams.  I’ve been using the beta version for a while but started a new diagram this week and I’m having trouble adding new interfaces to an existing diagram that already has filtered interfaces on it.   Can anyone spot what I might be doing wrong?

Sequence:

  1. Create a new DFD,
  2. Add some applications with provided interfaces between them.
  3. Show some of the interfaces by filtering and picking a few.  They show as named lines between the diagrams.
  4. Save the diagram.
  5. Create a new interface between the applications.
  6. Go back into the diagram and attempt to add the new interface through the show by filter option.
  7. All of the previous interfaces AND the new one are checked already, and grayed out.  I cannot add them to the diagram.  It’s as if the system thinks that the new interface is already on the diagram - but it isn’t.

The only workaround that I’ve found is to remove all filtered interfaces from the diagram and then I can add them and the new one back - but that loses all formatting.

Has anyone found this same behavior, and/or a better workaround?  Or is this just a bug?

Hi Brian!
Do you have an “Update” button in the top right corner of your diagram? (At step 6 ^ )
If you do, click update and see if the changes propagate into your diagram.  When I get a few mins, I’ll see if I can reproduce what you’re seeing.
Thanks/Good luck : )

Thanks for the quick response!  Yes, I have the button (and tried it) but it doesn’t recognize any updates - says “No updates”.

Hello again Brian.
At step 6, when you are trying to add the new Interface, select, and delete, the existing interface.  Then your “Filter by interface” option will work again.  This may be a bug, or just anticipated, behavior currently.

Not the most optimal solution, but I think this will require some development to meet the expected behavior.

I hope that helps sir.

Have a great day!

Thanks, at least I know it’s not just me now.  :)  I came to the same workaround.  It’s painful when I have dozens of interfaces and add just one more - costs me 30 minutes each time to make it pretty again.  It sure does sound like a bug to me - after adding it, it shows the check box as checked, thinking it is on the diagram.  Not sure if it tried to add it and failed or assumes that everything “should be” on in the UI.

Is there anything I can do to get this on a roadmap or bug report?  I am routinely using this diagram type instead of free draw because it is so much faster to create and maintain interface views.
